Intrauterine Device (IUD)

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped contraceptive device made from plastic and copper that fits inside the womb (uterus). It used to be called a coil or a loop.A plastic string is attached to the end to ensure correct placement and for removal. IUDs are an easily reversible form of birth control, and they can be easily removed. However, an IUD should only be removed by a medical professional. How an IUD Works Hormonal and copper IUDs work in different ways. With a copper IUD, a small amount of copper is released into the uterus. This type of IUD does not affect ovulation or the menstrual cycle. Copper IUDs prevent sperm from being able to go into the egg by immobilizing the sperm on the way to the fallopian tubes. If an egg does become fertilized, implantation on the wall of the uterus is prevented because copper changes the lining of the uterus. With hormonal IUDs, a small amount of progestin or a similar hormone is released into the uterus. These hormones thicken cervical mucus and make it difficult for sperm to enter the cervix. Hormonal IUDs also slow down the growth of the uterine lining, making it inhospitable for fertilized eggs. Advantages and disadvantages of IUD Advantages Both the copper IUD and the Mirena IUD have the following benefits: » effective long term contraception (at least five years) » easy to maintain, you can't forget to use it as you might the Pill » it is cheaper than other contraception (more expensive at first but cheaper over the long term) » if you want to, you can try for pregnancy as soon as it is removed. The Progestogen (Mirena) IUD has the added benefit of reducing menstrual bleeding. This is a benefit for women who would normally have heavy or long lasting periods or women who have heavier or longer lasting periods with the copper IUD. Disadvantages Both the copper and the progestogen IUD have the following disadvantages: » although rare, when an IUD fails and the woman becomes pregnant, the device must be removed as soon as possible. An IUD in a pregnant woman increases the risk of miscarriage » the IUD may expel itself from the uterus usually during a period. The woman may not be aware that this has happened and should always check that the string is in place » there is a small risk of infection in the three weeks following insertion » because pelvic infections can lead to infertility, it is important that a woman with an IUD be particularly careful about protecting herself from sexually transmitted infections » the IUD may perforate the wall of the uterus. This is a very rare occurrence and may happen when the IUD is being inserted » there is also the risk of an ectopic pregnancy (where the fertilised egg implants in the fallopian tubes) when the IUD fails (this is very rare with the copper IUD and even rarer with the Progestogen IUD).

The intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is an effective method of contraception. It is also known as 'the coil'. Most women have no problems with their IUCD. Once fitted, it can stay in place for several years. What is an intrauterine contraceptive device? (IUCD) An IUCD is a small device made from plastic and copper. There are two threads attached to the coil which lie in the vagina. They allow it to be removed easily. It can be placed quite easily into the womb (uterus) by a trained doctor or nurse. How does the intrauterine contraceptive device work as a contraceptive? It works mainly by stopping the egg and sperm from meeting. It may also prevent the fertilised egg from attaching to the lining of the uterus. The copper also has a spermicidal effect (kills sperm). What are the advantages of the intrauterine contraceptive device? Once an IUCD is inserted you can forget about contraception. So, unlike the pill, you don't need to think about contraception every day. It does not interfere with sex. It is not an hormonal method so it has no side-effects on the rest of the body. This means that it will not affect your mood, weight or libido. Having an IUCD does not increase your risk of having any type of cancer in the future. Because it does not contain hormones, many women can have an IUCD if they wish. There are some situations where an IUCD is not recommended, such as undiagnosed, irregular vaginal bleeding and pelvic infection. Your doctor or nurse will make sure it is safe for you to use a coil, by asking questions about your health.
